A full disclosure regarding this post: I stole this brilliant idea from the brilliant Nicole Antoinette Ross of the brilliant blog Nicole Is Better (gotta give props) who stole the brilliant idea from someone else who is probably also brilliant. But before we get to that…

…what do you want? Not right now. Right now I want something better to watch on TV. But this isn’t a life time goal. I have a new dream. A new goal. And every person does. Maybe you’re one of the lucky few who is living their dream. But a lot aren’t. A lot of people feel lost. They don’t even know what it is they want or should be doing. Or they do but they need help getting there.

Okay now about that brilliant idea. Nicole suggested on her blog that we all help each other. There’s something called a Resource Party where people get together and tell each other what their big dream is. And then if anyone in the room has any resources they hand that person their business card. So what Nicole did is the virtual version of this.

Here’s what I want us to do: tell us a very specific dream or goal you have. Leave your contact info. Then if you see a comment where you can help, reply and contact them. Who knows what kind of help people can offer? Maybe you don’t have an “in” but maybe you’re good at motivating people, and that goes a long way. I’ll post my dream in the comments.

What would give me an edge?

I would like to start a small business, selling sex toys in a female-friendly boutique style shop. I’ve almost completed a degree in economics, and I have experience selling toys, but I’m not sure where or how to get started with the whole process! I can also be contacted via Twitter (@ nicetobelieve).

I could totally help with this. Although I don’t sell toys myself one of my friends/colleagues that I work with on my blog recently started exactly the kind of business you’re interested in (female friendly sex toys & lingerie online store). She’d be full of all kinds of advice & she’s also super cool. I could connect you guys!

Allie – I’m in Pittsburgh, Pa, but if I ever get to travel to Sydney, I’m going to have to stop there! There’s also a shop in Portland, OR, called SheBop (they have a website, too: http://www.sheboptheshop.com) that I think is really inspiring.

Sooooooo I’ve always wanted to be a surgeon of some sort. I watch too much TV and have three older brothers, so blood and guts and cutting people open are great to me. My dilemma is that I have never been good with science or math and have no clue what it takes to get there. I was going to drop my dream and just go to school as an English major, but people keep convincing me to try anyway. The end.
Happy dreaming!

Reply

Catherine February 21, 2012 at 2:50 am

Have you considered studying to become a paramedic or a surgical nurse? If you can handle the blood and guts (which many people can’t), you would be a great benefit to society if you could work in the medical field. Good luck!

Reply

Annie February 22, 2012 at 8:35 am

Don’t give up! My boyfriend started out in liberal arts and now he’s applying to medical school. He proved to me that even if you think you aren’t “good at” science or math, if you apply yourself and study enough you can understand them and be successful. It just takes discipline. If you’re still in college, there’s time to change your major. It might take a semester or two longer, but it’s worth it in the long run. Plus, we need more women in healthcare!

Tony Archer February 26, 2012 at 10:23 pm

One of my best friends has been a graphic designer for the last ten years and is now in nursing school. It’s never to late to change your mind! Go for it!
But, be warned that surgery is more than seeing. You’re also touching, hearing, and SMELLING the blood and guts as you work on them. But if you’re one of the few who can stomach the whole experience, PLEASE go for it! The world always needs more good medical professionals.

I want to retire from this daycare rat race and just really focus on going to the gym, painting pictures of unicorns and trying to get pregnant. I figure all I need is a house to move into, so if anyone has a spare house in Vancouver or maybe a million-ish dollars so I can buy one, that’d be great.

Almie Rose March 2, 2012 at 1:01 pm

Yo, “The difference between a dream and a goal is a deadline” — Dr. Phil (WHAT DON’T JUDGE IT’S GOOD ADVICE.)

Write this down and plan out
– the date you sign up for a gym
– the day you start going to a gym
– the day you get supplies to paint uniforms
– the day you paint unicorns
– the approximate time when you want to have a child and what you need from now until then — money, housing, etc.
– basically, put it in terms of numbers, because numbers don’t lie and they’re easier to look at than “some day.”
– and remember, I don’t think there’s ever a “perfect” time to get pregnant. Don’t feel pressured by time. Time is whatever you make it.

This is a fabulous idea! I want to be a librarian. Which means I need to go to grad school, but that’s expeeeesive. I currently work as a library assistant at an awesome public library, and I LOVE my job. But I barely make enough to survive. I try to save as much as I can, but it’s not easy. So basically, my dream is to win the lottery and then get my degree wherever the hell I want. yes?

I have the same dream! I’m in college right now, but I have no idea what the process is for applying to grad school or even getting entry level positions in a library.
If you live in the US and your income (or your parents, if you’re a dependent) is low enough, you may qualify for FAFSA. That’s the only way I can afford school.

I looked into Library Science programs not long ago, and there are many programs that you can do part time. Just go in the evenings and weekends and you can keep making money. You’ll still need some loans but at least you won’t be out of a job, and you will probably get promoted as well because you’re in school. Go for it!

This is an awesome idea, Almie. Am happy to do script exchange/feedback with others interested in writing.

I’d like a literary agent and/or manager. I’ve got at least one brilliant-and-commercial screenplay (Yo, Let’s Save Jesus), which I and my co-writers are doing a reading of this Saturday afternoon, a very entertaining half-hour pilot, and a viable spec. Hourlong pilot is in the process of being overhauled. Also several plays (several produced) and a novel.

Okay, first, I love this idea. THANKS, ALMIE!

My Occupational Fantasy: I’d like to be a full-time, non-fiction writer who works from home. (sexy?)

I don’t have the attention span to write a full novel, nor am I pithy enough to be a copywriter. My expertise is more…um… mid-length, humorous ramblings about life as a single lady in her late-twenties. My style is conversational, friendly, and, according to my friends, funny. (But they’re drunk most of the time.)

My blog is here: http://www.theresyourkarma.com/

Is there anywhere I can write like this and get PAID for it? I guess what I’m looking to do is provide online content, but I have no idea where to start. HALP.

It’s the dream and I am inching my way there.

Firstly, love your blog and I think you’ve got a great thing going.

Secondly, you have to make your blog your job. It’s not going to pay you at first and you have to work hard for it. If you have a full time job this is very difficult, I know. But the more you put out online, the more you get back.

Connect with bloggers you like. Ask if you can guest post. Comment on their blogs. There are lots of awesome online lady magazines and blogs that accept submissions. Submit everywhere.

And hey, try actual print magazines too. In the beginning, you probably aren’t going to get paid for your writing and that’s the worst part.

But you can’t stop. Don’t ever stop.

Also pick up a book on social networking. I recommend “The Social Media Guru” at least I think that’s what it’s called. The book is yellow and there’s someone doing a yoga pose on the front. Or check out Mari Smith for free online: https://www.facebook.com/marismith

I’ve been incredibly lucky but I’m still not there. And honestly? The whole thing is a crap shoot. But if you can do everything you possibly can, you’ve got a great chance to actually make money.

Reply

Simone February 20, 2012 at 5:15 pm

I agree with everything Almie said. I got into freelancing by:

a) writing for smaller online magazines & group blogs for free (great experience & helps to build up your portfolio.)
b) Asking around to see if anyone I knew had any friends in magazine publishing. As it turns out a friend of a friend worked for Elle Canada. I emailed her and set up an informational coffee chat with her. We hung out & when she became editor in chief of a large women’s online magazine she brought me on as a freelancer. Now I write for her on a regular basis. Almost all of my freelance work has come from people that I know or friends of friends.
c) Like Almie said, make your blog your job. If you can’t make it your full time job, at least think of it as your “resume” & as part of your portfolio. Write stuff you are proud of & that showcase your talent & that you’d want prospective editors to read. All of my writing jobs have come from people who have read my blog.
d) You should totally contact my buddies over at Twenties Hacker: http://twentieshacker.com/ They are a great group & writing for them would be a great way to build up your experience.

I hope that helps! Feel free to email me if you have any questions. skinnydipblog@gmail.com.

LOVE this idea!

Not sure how I can help anyone’s dream but I’m a fairly decent editor (text and film) if anyone needs a hand.

I really want to work in film production (of any kind – tv, film, music videos) but Australia has a tiny industry for that. So if anyone has a job going in the States that would also SPONSOR my visa, let me know.

Ok, here’s mine:

My big dream is to turn some of the stories on my blog into a book. However, I’m not quite sure where to start with this project. If anyone has any insights or have been through the process, I’d love to hear from you!

The second half of this is that I’d really love to be able to 100% subsist on my freelancing & blog income. I’m getting closer to this however, there’s still a way to go. What I really need to is attract more advertisers to my blog. If any of you have any tips on how to sell more ad space, I’d also love to hear from you!

Thanks! xox

Zoe DeLeon February 20, 2012 at 9:38 pm

I’m Zoe, and I’m a junior in college who studies literature, but I want to be a writer, specifically I want to write for the screen and for the stage. I live in Florida, so I know I’ll (probably) have to move to like LA or NY, and I’m thinking about going to graduate school to get an MFA in either screenwriting and play-writing or screenwriting and directing so I can get some training and make connections. I’ve worked on films and plays at my university (I write a lot of satire/parody and dark humor stuffs), but there isn’t much of a program at my school, so I’m trying to figure out the best way to plan it out so I can live my dream or whatever. At least I know that I can become an English teacher if things don’t work out, ha.

Reply

Almie Rose February 21, 2012 at 3:21 pm

I could be way off on this because I’m not a screenwriter but from what I’ve heard getting an MFA is a waste. I actually majored in playwriting (LOLLLLL) and it doesn’t help at all. What would help is staging a reading of your stuff so you can hear it out loud. Show your stuff to people whose opinions you trust. Film a scene from your screenplay or try to mount your own production of your play. It doesn’t have to have money behind it.

You don’t make connections from school; you make connections via friends (both internet and IRL) and from getting out there both physically and metaphorically in whatever way you can. At least this is true in my experience.

BUT I AM NOT AN EXPERT IN THIS. It’s just my opinion. :)

Reply

I work for a couple of VO actors and I researched/contacted some talent agencies for them. A good resource that I used was http://voicebank.net/ – if you go to the top of the page and click on Voice Over Talent Agency, it’ll bring you to a page with a whole bunch of options. I looked at Production Houses and Talent Agencies. From my veeeery limited experience (only a few months of being an assistant), sometimes the best thing to do is just get a reel together and then promote, promote, promote yourself – send people your stuff. Or even get a web site with some VO sound bites of yours and start linking people to it.

Just an idea! =]

Annie, I support this 150%! Back in ’08, I kept having the urge to do the same thing, but like you, I was terrified of leaving behind my familiar life. But after a lot of debate and soul searching, I finally did it and haven’t regretted it for a second. I spent 3 months volunteering and traveling around Ecuador through an organization called ELI (www.eliabroad.org). They provided a ton of support from helping me choose a country to setting me up with homestays and organizations to work for. Plus, they were MUCH cheaper than any other comparable organization (Habitat for Humanity, Greenpeace, etc.) I priced it out and would have spent more money just on my own room and board, not to mention the added support services and network they provide. So, just go for it!!! Bon voyage!

P.S. Get travel insurance. I went through STA, which ended up being worth every penny when I lost my camera in the Galapagos (*groan*) and they reimbursed me for the original value of it (more than I paid for the insurance!). Plus, it gives you medical coverage as well. Good luck!

I want to start or work for a non-profit that works with school-age girls to encourage them to pursue STEM (Science, technology, engineering, mathematics) interests. I’ll finally be graduating in a year and it has taken 6 years and a degree in biology for me to realize that I do not wish to be a career scientist or doctor. I love science and I’m good at it, but my passions are in feminism, women’s issues, and non-profit work. What better way to combine all of my interests?

Does anyone know of a non-profit doing this kind of work?

Reply

Annie February 22, 2012 at 1:09 pm

It isn’t science-oriented in particular, but Girls Inc. is an awesome nonprofit that does a ton of program-based work to empower girls around the country in a million different ways. I would look there for a way to use your skills.http://www.girlsinc.org/girls-inc.html Also you should definitely look into education programs. Schools, nonprofits, after-school program, all need bright young women who are role models… It doesn’t have to require being a teacher, but can involve designing programs, doing research, drafting policy, etc. Also check out http://www.idealist.org for more ideas and organizations.

Anyone know of any professional wedding/portrait/lifestyle photographers who would be willing to let someone tag along on some sessions to get some advice/experience? Anyone wanna start a group and get together and be creative? My dream is about TV! My friend and I have been making a daily public access / internet tv talk show called Your Daily Hour With Me every day for over 500 days. It’s really fun and mostly involves the community in the Olympia Washington area, but my dream is for it to get bigger!

It’s low-fi and mostly done on equipment we could get for free. We tape to VHS but then it airs on our local public access tv station TCTV and we put it on youtube. All the videos are here: http://www.youtube.com/kennysandwich

We have a website (http://www.ydhwm.co.cc) but I’m not much of a web designer. Most of all we like guests and hearing peoples stories! We are a call in show and If any other readers want to be on tv, even just their voice, you should call us at (330) 536-3802.

If you call that number, it will ring the YDHWM phone and if we are live we will answer and if we are not you can leave a message and we will listen to it on the show and then call you back!

Anyway, my dream is to try to get the show in more places. And maybe even get famous guests like Almie Rose!
