My friend Laura really knows how to pose in photos. She’s incredible.
The only person you can really ever depend on is yourself, so don’t let yourself down!
You can exercise every day but if you eat crap it’s not going to make a damn difference.
Opportunities are there for you to take advantage of. If you don’t, you have no one to blame but yourself!
There is always someone out there stupider than you are.
Rihanna is hard. So hard.
It’s ok for me to say no.
If you’re not being true to yourself and who you are, then there’s no point in even being there. So if you feel you need to paint a lighting bolt on your face to go to a party, then you better fucking do it. Be you!
People are not going to go out of their way to help you.
Image is reality. You can look like who you want to be, even if you’re not. The rest will follow.
Don’t make it easy for people to flake out on you.
This industry scares me.
To be perfectly honest I’m pretty lazy.
I’m so afraid of people saying no that I don’t give them the chance to say yes.
Cooking something is the quickest and easiest way to feeling accomplished.
Marcia Cross is crazy nice.
No one has a definitive answer. One person might hate something that another person loves. All you can do is your best. All you can do is try.
If you don’t try then you can’t complain.
Everyone loves capes. It makes you feel like a kid again.
Dating an actor is a terrible, terrible idea.
Dating a musician isn’t really worth it either.
No one our age knows what they’re doing.
We have no idea how much we should be enjoying our youth.
I would date Kanye West in a heartbeat.
Everyone has to start somewhere. No, really. It’s OK if you’re just starting out. Just own up to your inexperience. Then gain experience.
Only you can make your dreams come true! It sounds corny and it is until it happens. Then it’s fucking rad!! So make it happen!
Whenever it looks hopeless just look at Mickey Rourke. If he can make a comeback, so can you.

Let Me Get What I Want.

January 1st is bullshit. It does not exist! It only exists in your mind. By which I mean…DO NOT WAIT UNTIL JANUARY 1ST TO START YOUR RESOLUTIONS. INSTEAD, START THEM NOW, SO BY JANUARY 1st YOU’LL ALREADY BE OFF TO A GREAT START! Instead of saying, “I’d like to lose 10 pounds starting January” why not lose the 10 pounds before January so you can look banging on New Years Eve? (By the way, it’s not advisable to lose 10 pounds in a whisker under a month but if you want to I suggest cocaine. That’s what all the stars use! If you cannot afford cocaine then you can try caffeine. But no solids. Ever. Not until after January 1st, rockstar!)
But really. Don’t let Glamour magazine tell you to wait for the first. Or your teachers. Or the television with the Desperate Housewives and the Jello pudding. Do it now. Join me! It will be like a giant flashmob on the internet. But instead of reaching for dance moves we’ll be reaching for our goals. Or reaching for metaphors like I just did.
So tomorrow is December 5th. By January 5th, I want you all to complete something that’s important to you. Maybe it’s to come up with an awesome outfit for the Lady GaGa concert on the 22nd at the Nokia Theatre, but that’s totally not why my goal is, I mean that’s just silly, right? Yeah it’s not like I’m already getting ideas for makeup and hair, maybe even considering buying a bow wig on Ebay or trying to recreate her SNL outfit from when she was with Madonna. I AM TOTALLY NOT DOING THAT IN SAFARI RIGHT NOW. SHHHH. Dont’ tell anyone you guys. Let’s just keep it a secret between us and the internet.
Maybe your goal is something better than that (not that that’s what my goal is because it isn’t at all). Maybe you’re looking for a part time job. Or trying to pick a major. Or maybe you’re working on a screenplay. I don’t know! I don’t know what people do. I mean, I know what people do, because people are insufferable and love to talk about their jobs and when they do that my brain is all, “Psh, later dude” and floats out via my ears and I’m stuck watching a cartoon on loop, Homer Simpson-style. Then when they stop talking I’m forced to say something about myself so I wind up making some dumb joke because I hate being sincere and then they say to their friends that I’m a bitch with no feelings and that I try too hard. Then I go home and write about it in my journal and cry while listening to Morrissey. Then if it’s raining I lean my face against the rain and pretend like the raindrops are tears falling down my face. If it’s not raining I run the shower and get on the other side of the shower door and press my face against that. It’s called adapting to your surroundings.
But let’s do it together, you guys. Let’s be the Black Eyed Peas. You guys are Will.I.Am., Taboo…and the other dude. I’m Fergie. Together we’re going to wear diabolical outfits and sing songs that, according to my brother, sound like they should be in “High School Musical or some shit, can’t you picture Zach Efron singing to this? God I hate this song, change it.” Then I tell him to shut up because I’m the one driving. We can do this, together. Tell me what your goals are for the new year and fuck the new year because we’re doing it now. I GOTTA FEELING.
Then when 2010 comes we’ll be ahead of the game. I’ve always wanted to be ahead for once! My whole life I’ve been falling behind. Not this time, paper gangsters. This time I’m going to stop procrastinating and start getting everything I’ve ever wanted. It’s scary but it’s time. It’s time for all of us!
A Whole New World — Aladdin Soundtrack
P.S. After you download this (because I know you will, don’t even pretend you won’t) pretend it’s Morrissey singing it. Then realize it would be a fantastic song for him to cover and wonder why he hasn’t already.
Someday.

Nadia Cassini, a very rad woman. I have once been told that I look like her. It was the highlight of my day, my week, my month, even my year.
I’ve got to believe that it’s going to get better. I need to, like Rod Stewart, find a reason to believe.
It’s not always going to be like this. There’s going to be a day when we know what we’re doing. There’s going to be a day when we’re dating someone who is not an asshole. There’s going to be a day when we are paid for doing something we love and are good at and make our parents proud. This day is coming and we need to believe this.
We need to cheer up somehow. We need to tell ourselves that it’s not so bad. We need to find friends and tell them that we need them. We need to go out and we need to make responsible decisions but we also need to have fun.
We need to eat well and stop gorging ourselves on rich cheeses. That is, I think we need to do this. We need to firmly and finally drop people from our lives who respond to our cries of help with, “Ask someone else.” We need to let people know that our time is valuable and that we deserve your attention and respect.
When our friends tell us that that guy is not a nice guy then we need to believe them. When people show us who they really are we need to believe them. We need to believe in ourselves that it will all work out. Maybe to help us we can believe that any choice we make is the right one, as long as we’re making it in a sane frame of mind.
Because we need to stop doubting ourselves. Hating ourselves. Pitying ourselves.
But if we can’t then we need to be OK somehow. Someday. And if all we can do is hope and believe then that’s what we’ll do. Because that’s something. That’s the first step towards something.
I have to believe that it’s going to get better.
What?
“Uhhh.”
I think sometimes we just need to be honest with ourselves. Maybe NOT with each other because sometimes little lies save us from being social misfits. Lies like, “Oh yeah I just nailed that job interview” when someone asks you how you’re doing instead of saying, “Oh yeah I just nailed that Gossip Girl internet survey.”
My honesty? I like getting drunk and going to wax museums. I like men who are attractive. I like vicodin. What?
“Well…there’s still time next time you visit. And I believe they have some LA shows booked. But remember, he is 19.”
I’m actually not. What I’m picturing is my friend’s face as she reads this at her cubicle. God love ya, G-chat.
I also have a thing for musicians, and weirdly enough, younger musicians. I think if you’re a girl and you’re in your early 20s, you also have a thing for musicians. Almost all musicians love me back. Except for two. But one of them was mentally…stunted. So I don’t know if that counts. But that’s another post.
If you can’t be honest with yourself then you’re just making life more difficult. So just admit it. Admit that you’re scared about this new opportunity, be it job related or relationship-wise. Then take a deep breath. The hardest part is admitting your truth. But once you do, nothing bad can happen. It’s out there. It’s you.
I listen to Phoenix and I listen to Britney Spears. What? There’s nothing wrong with that. Nothing is mutually exclusive anymore. Just own your truth. Don’t be afraid to be the person that you really want to be. I think Lady GaGa is the best example of this. And I admire her.
What?
P.S. What you guys want to see more of on this blog? What do you want to see less of? Any ideas? I’m listening! xoxo, Gossip Michael Caine
What's My Name Again
I just got bangs and I feel like my whole personality is different. In acting it’s very important to find your “type”. My type is quirky/artsy/bitchy Ellen Page bullshit, apparently, but I hate EP so I’m trying to sell a more Lizzy Caplan & Zooey Deschanel type vibe. (Although let me say that I will go with WHOEVER gets me the most buzz/money/whatever.) Hence the bangs. That Zooey is so hot right now.
But the bangs are really having an effect on me. I feel more like a little girl. I had bangs when I was a little kid. These take me back to that. Also they’re in my face/eyes constantly. And they’re making my forehead break out. Thus I feel more insecure. They’re easy to hide behind, too. So I do a lot of hiding.
People who see me probably think I listen to The Shins. They’re probably surprised that I’m not wearing flannel. I bought a flannel shirt yesterday. I felt like I had to. In 5th grade everyone had No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom. It was like, “Welcome to 5th grade, here’s your copy of Tragic Kingdom.” This is no different. “Welcome to your bangs, here’s a flannel shirt, enjoy.”
Furthermore, I don’t think my hair dresser really listened to what kind of bangs I wanted. Although I brought in photos of Zooey D I find myself with a very distinct 60s haircut. The bangs are longer on the sides and kind of curve in. It’s like I’m wearing a Beatles wig with extensions. OK, it’s not that bad. I like the bangs. But they’re not the kind of bangs I was hoping for. Who would have thought that there were different types?
Oh I’m sorry. “Fringe” for all of you UK-ers. Yes, I think your term makes way more sense than ours. What in the sweet fuck is a bang? But a fringe, that’s actually something you can picture.
Maybe once they grow out I can get them re-cut to how I originally wanted. People can do that, right? Re-cut a fringe? Why doesn’t anyone understand me?
I have lots of vintage dresses but maybe I should buy more. I bought more striped shirts yesterday. That’s a start, right? I just want to be loved. I just want someone to tell me what to do and what to say and what to wear at all times. Can I pay someone to do that? To come over to my house and plan my outfits for a good 4 months ahead and tell me, “Oh you should absolutely say this at that party tomorrow” or “Honey, never tell this person this because they think this about you and this.” Oh gosh. Maybe I should just get a television in my room instead.

Why Are You So Ugly?
This is probably backwards thinking on my part but what really upsets me is when an ex’s current girlfriend/fling is less attractive than I am. If she’s more attractive then I can think, “Eh, whatever” but if she’s ugly then I think, “Holy shit, then what was I? I thought I was reasonably good looking but look at what you’re dating now. Girl looks like Dudley Moore with boobs.”
I’ll own up to the fact that this is mean but it’s not like I ever tell my ex, “Hey you’re dating Nick Nolte’s mugshot.” I keep it to myself. Well, myself and the internet. But it’s not like I name names or post photos. I would never do that. That’s way harsh, Tai.
Or sometimes I’ll be dating someone and I’ll check their facebook profile and I’ll see photos of them with previous girlfriends and I’ll just be shocked by the homeliness of it all. It’s like they’re dating Jennifer Aniston but without the hot body. And it worries me. Why are they dating me? And is the person that I’m dating not really as attractive as I think they are? Because don’t hot people typically date other hot people?
I know, it shouldn’t matter. But this is who I am. Looks are important to me. I can’t date someone if I’m not physically attracted to them. I just can’t. Everyone has a certain type or two that they really dig. So If I dig a skinny awkward/cute type then chances are he digs girls with Zooey Deschanel haircuts. So imagine how alarming it would be if his ex looked like a Great Depression-era farmer.
Imagine that you’re at a party and there’s a glass bowl of champagne punch. It looks beautiful and it probably tastes great. But then someone plunks down a plate of half eaten baloney sandwiches on a tray cluttered with dirty napkins and chewed gum beside it. Are you still going to be as inclined to drink the punch? No. It’s like, why don’t you just poison the goddamn punch. Even if you tasted the punch and it was delicious, you’re going to start to wonder what kind of person throws a party where they allow rubbish on the buffet table.
I don’t think people should date under their hotness level. Look at Fred Armisen and Elizabeth Moss. That’s a great couple. Now look at Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob. They divorced. And why? Because he’s way less attractive than she is. Now look at Brangelina. Your honor, I rest my case.
(Oh don’t even start with, “Well what about Hugh Jackman, his wife is pretty normal looking.” Hugh Jackman is gayer than a handbag full of rainbows.)
WHAT. I’M JUST SAYING.
In conclusion, do not send me hate mail, I’m no Michelle Pfeiffer circa “Scarface” and I know it, okay? I’m just being honest. That’s what this blog is about. Honesty. Or something I don’t really know what this blog is about. Ask your mom.

True Lies. Nothing To Do With The Film.
On what occasion is it okay to lie? There is, after all, a time and place for everything, right? Given that 5% of the people you are going to meet are actually going to want to hear your true opinion, here is what to say to the other 95% percent and when.
THE QUESTION: What have you been up to lately?
Lie.
Most of the time people only ask this question to make sure that you’re not doing better than they are. Think about it. How many people do you know of would actually care if you said, “Well I spend most of my mornings sleeping, my afternoons crying, and my evenings drinking?” They would probably feel really awkward and slink away, but be secretly relieved that you don’t have a 6 picture deal with Fox. This is the kind of question people ask when they don’t know you well enough. This is an Aunt Mabel type of question (i.e. something your Aunt Mabel would ask you at Thanksgiving). Therefore when someone asks this question, rather than roll your eyes and/or tell them the truth about your sad life, I find it’s much more constructive to say, “Well I spend my mornings exercising, my afternoons taking meetings and figuring out my five year plan, and my evenings with this great guy I’m seeing”. Spin, spin spin. “Unemployed” can be “traveling”, “weighing my options”, “taking meetings”, “writing”, “taking classes” and other vague descriptions of activities. (If you have a really great life then of course these rules don’t apply to you, GEORGE CLOONEY.)
THE QUESTION: Don’t you think my new boyfriend is cute?
Lie.
You don’t need to lay it on too thick but you don’t need to call him straight-up fugly either. Say that he’s not your type but add something like, “He has beautiful eyes” and then ask your friend if she’s really excited for season 3 of Mad Men. Don’t tell them that you usually don’t go for guys who could body double for Jason Seigel (ouch, I felt that one). Don’t tell them that he looks like the kind of guy who would steal your car. Just say whatever they want to hear and move on. If however they are a rapist or violent asshole then you need to be honest. Hopefully that part goes without saying.
THE QUESTION: Do you like my new hair?
Lie.
Hair grows back, hair dye washes out. Again, for the 5% of people who know who preface their question with, “I really want your honest opinion, please” then what they really want to hear is, “Wow you look great!” All anyone wants out of this world is to look great. If you want to know what people really think of your new hair then don’t say anything, just wait for their comments. If they say, “You changed your hair!” then what they’re really saying is, “and it sucks” or “and it’s barely any different but I feel like I should say something or you’ll be pissed.” Don’t forget: the truth lies just as much in what people DON’T say than what they DO.
THE QUESTION: Can I borrow your book/DVD/money/whatever?
Lie.
YOU WILL NEVER SEE YOUR BOOK AND/OR DVD AND/OR MONEY AGAIN. I don’t care if they’re your best friend. They will lose it. They won’t do it on purpose but it will happen. And would you really want a material item to come between your friendship? Why risk it? Say, “Oh, I loaned ‘Rushmore’ to my brother.” If they say, “But I see it right there on your shelf” say, “No that’s just the cover; they have the actual DVD.” If they follow that up with, “Why didn’t you give them the DVD in the cover?” say, “Aren’t you excited for Season 3 of Mad Men?”
THE QUESTION: What do you think of Paul Dano?
I’m honestly curious about what you think. I think he’s creepy. Great actor, really creepy. I can’t look at his face for too long or I start to hear the piano theme from “Eyes Wide Shut”. It’s that type of creepy. Paul Dano definitely looks like the type of guy who would steal your car. He and Jack White. If I ever see those two walking down the street I will simultaneously cry and shit my pants. HOWEVER, if I am ever in Paul Dano’s presence I will NOT tell him that I think he is creepy. This is called lying by omission and it’s a beautiful thing.
Look, you don’t want to be known as a lying fiend, but honesty is only valuable when it’s over something or someone you care about. Otherwise it’s like foreign currency. Spend your honesty wisely.
