How To Appear Popular.

Rename all of the contacts in your phone with celebrity names. Then leave your phone lying out for someone to find. Chuckle when you say, “Kiki Dunst just loves texting.”

Write inside jokes on your friends’ walls. It doesn’t matter if they’re actually in on the joke. I find Simpsons quotes work well. Just pick a friend’s facebook page and write on it, “I call the big one bitey.” Everyone will read this exchange and think that you and your friend really have something special going. Note: you can do this with someone who isn’t really your friend but you want people to think you’re friends. And voila: instant private joke.

Get as many twitter followers as you can, even if they’re spam robots. If you can’t get lots of followers on twitter then don’t even get a twitter. Tell people, “Once I hit over a thousand followers it just got too difficult to deal with.” Then give a half smile that says something like, “You know how it is” and take a sip of your mocha latte.

When you arrive somewhere crowded alone pretend that you’re waving to your friend across the room. Smile, wave, and shout something like, “Are you going to David’s later?” Then laugh and clap and shake your head like, “Oh, that guy.” Then get to the bar and start drinking.

Write everything that you’re going to do in your planner but spin it. For example, going to Starbucks becomes coffee date or morning meeting. It’s important to fill your planner on the off chance that someone sees it. You’re going to want to appear busy. Write names under these plans. Find out the name of your favorite barista and put his/her name under “meeting, 10:30.” You’ll know what it really means but other people won’t. Patrick Bateman did something like this when he told Detective Kimball that he had a meeting at The Four Seasons with Cliff Huxtable. It’s just what people do.

Photograph everything you do and then put it on Facebook and then tag everyone and yourself. People will think, “Marcy sure does have a lot of friends and exciting things that she’s doing.” Maybe don’t photograph everything but just the events in which you’re dressed nicely and out with others. Don’t photograph yourself with your cat and then tag your cat. Everyone knows that cats don’t have Facebook profiles. Cats still use MySpace.

If you do all of these things then you will either be the most popular kid in town or the least. Ow, my eye! I’m not supposed to get pudding in it!

What The Backstreet Boys Have Taught Me.

I’m bad at hiding. I’ve tried to hide it so that no one knows, but I guess it shows, when you look into my eyes. So many times I thought I was cool but then when I look at the situation years later, with fresh eyes, I’m about as cool as a dude pushing thirty in a white outfit with a goatee.

You can’t bring Thriller back. You can dress up as a werewolf, a mummy, a Phantom of the Opera, and whatever the other two guys were, and you can all dance around in a big group while holding your arms up, but it’s still not going to be Thriller. That epic moment in musical history is not yours, BSB. And that goes for all of us. We don’t have to recreate Thriller. We just have to do what we do best and love most.

Airports are great places to dance in.

Something is going to be really popular for a few years and then it’s going to be totally lame. Then it’s going to be popular again in an ironic way. But then it’s going to be popular again in a new nostalgic way. And I want it that way.

Most gatherings of five guys are going to include a cute one, a guy who looks really old, another guy who looks really old for a different reason that you can’t quite place, and then two other guys who are totally forgettable. But you don’t always have to pick the cute one.

You can go years without hearing a certain song but as soon as you hear those first few bars, all of the lyrics are going to come back to you and some of the dance moves too, and goddamn it, that’s fucking magical.

We’ve all wanted to turn back time, impossible as it may seem. But we still want to…so bad[ly]. We have to get over this. WE FUCKING CAN’T! IT’S OVER, GUYS! IT’S IN THE PAST! But don’t let your past define you. Don’t let it torture you. Don’t let it do anything but make you fucking grateful that you have more days ahead of you to live. I have to admit that some days when I say this, it just doesn’t sound true. I can’t believe it. But I say it anyway. Because one day, I’m going to believe it. And that’s the day it will be true.

If somebody’s back and you’re happy about it — all right! There’s nothing more to say. Say it, accept it, deal with it. All right!

But no matter whether you listened to the Backstreet Boys, or not; whether you think they’re terrible or not; whether you were too old or even too young when they were popular; there is one thing we can all agree on and that is that I don’t care who you are, where you’re from, or even what you did; as long as you love me, none of it matters.

Cute Boys

Sometimes really cute boys come into work. No, like, really cute. Like after he leaves, “Oh My God did you guys see that guy who was just in here?” cute.

Our policy is to ask for ID with every credit card purchase so sometimes I can get the guy’s name and then google them. WHAT? THAT’S TOTALLY NORMAL. I mean because every single time the guy has been cute it’s because he’s also an actor. Someone I already vaguely recognize. So one check on the internet brings up his imdb profile and sometimes who he’s dating. Thank you, internet!

I would never, ever contact them though. Not even through missed connections on craigslist. That’s not my scene. Once I got really drunk and wrote one for some guy who worked in a yogurt shop. Then the next day I freaked out and deleted it. Because, well, yikes.

Some of the cute boys who come in are just classic cute. Actor cute. And not quirky actor cute like this Michael Cera shit but legit Zac Efron cute (You know what I mean. Zac Efron is cute. Let’s not kid ourselves. He has a pleasant face.) Others are artsy cute. There’s usually facial hair involved. And sometimes suspenders. And they’re always really thin and look vaguely haunted.

It’s a bummer. You have this moment of contact, smiling, flirting, etc and then they’re gone forever. I watch too many movies. Because if it were a movie they would have left their scarf behind. And I would run after them but it would be too late. So I would sketch them in their scarf and make fliers and post them up and that would lead to a website and that would lead to a spot on the Today Show and it would be all about the charming girl played by Mila Kunis who is looking for the boy in the red scarf and he wouldn’t find her/me until the end of the film because he was traveling with his mean bitchy girlfriend who was purposefully trying to keep us apart who he finally decides to dump after seeing me on television wishing I could meet him. Fergie sings over the credits.

But the people who want to know you are the people you never want to know. In real life, the boy in the red scarf has a girlfriend. I mean sometimes people try to be nice and say, “Oh he was probably just referring to his sister when he said, ‘Hi sweetie’ on the phone” and it’s like, when does the hot guy ever have a sister? When is it actually a hilarious sitcom misunderstanding like that?

Or the guy who wants you is weird and creepy and won’t leave you alone or he’s simply not attractive to you or you have no common interests or all of those things combined. The people who I want are never the people who want me and the people who want me are never the people I want. I guess that’s just how life is.

Boners.

What I’ve Learned.

My friend Laura really knows how to pose in photos. She’s incredible.
The only person you can really ever depend on is yourself, so don’t let yourself down!
You can exercise every day but if you eat crap it’s not going to make a damn difference.
Opportunities are there for you to take advantage of. If you don’t, you have no one to blame but yourself!
There is always someone out there stupider than you are.
Rihanna is hard. So hard.
It’s ok for me to say no.
If you’re not being true to yourself and who you are, then there’s no point in even being there. So if you feel you need to paint a lighting bolt on your face to go to a party, then you better fucking do it. Be you!
People are not going to go out of their way to help you.
Image is reality. You can look like who you want to be, even if you’re not. The rest will follow.
Don’t make it easy for people to flake out on you.
This industry scares me.
To be perfectly honest I’m pretty lazy.
I’m so afraid of people saying no that I don’t give them the chance to say yes.
Cooking something is the quickest and easiest way to feeling accomplished.
Marcia Cross is crazy nice.
No one has a definitive answer. One person might hate something that another person loves. All you can do is your best. All you can do is try.
If you don’t try then you can’t complain.
Everyone loves capes. It makes you feel like a kid again.
Dating an actor is a terrible, terrible idea.
Dating a musician isn’t really worth it either.
No one our age knows what they’re doing.
We have no idea how much we should be enjoying our youth.
I would date Kanye West in a heartbeat.
Everyone has to start somewhere. No, really. It’s OK if you’re just starting out. Just own up to your inexperience. Then gain experience.
Only you can make your dreams come true! It sounds corny and it is until it happens. Then it’s fucking rad!! So make it happen!
Whenever it looks hopeless just look at Mickey Rourke. If he can make a comeback, so can you.

ROMAMA

Last night at GaGa’s concert she told us, “Remember monsters, when you’re feeling lonely, I’m feeling lonely too.” I extend that to you too, readers. When you’re feeling lonely, awkward, confused, depressed, hungry, and frustrated, I too am feeling lonely, awkward, confused, depressed, hungry and frustrated.

She asked us if we could guess what she hates the most. I guessed Kanye. Turns out, it’s the truth. “I’ll take bullshit over the truth any day!” She said. I can agree with that. I can’t handle the truth either. Sorry, Jack.

More to come! I’ve been busy.

MY CHRISTMAS TREE'S DELICIOUS!

Happy Hanukah! That being said, Happy Christmas! My dearest friend Laura of Gumdrop Lane and I recorded two holiday cards for everyone and we’d like to share them with you. Find them at Gumdrop Lane. And keep checking her page for our special ~~Christmas Movie~~ that will probably embarrass us.

You can tell Christmas is coming because people are getting crazy and mean. At work some woman threw a hissy fit over five cents that she claimed I owed her but I did not because I counted her change twice but finally I just gave it to her so she would leave and stop making me feel stupid even though she was wrong. On the bright side, Marcia Cross came in and was really nice. It’s always the people who play total bitches that are the kindest, and the people who look kind who are total bitches. Know this.

Fashion And The Shining

Winter’s here and it’s time to snuggle by the fire and watch a classic holiday film. And we all know what that classic is: that’s right, The Shining.

Buh? Why so surprised, Jack?

The Shining has it all: a beautiful winter wonderlandscape, family, and the true meaning of Christmas (note: conclusions upon viewing may vary).

But my favorite part of The Shining is Shelley Duvall and her wardrobe. There’s something so underrated about Shelley Duvall. I think she looks like Jane Birkin. Actually her voice is pretty similar to Birkin’s too. I think we should put her on T-shirts. But that’s not important right now. In The Shining, Shelley keeps it simple but classic. Even though the clothes have a distinct late 70s feel to them they could easily be worn today. I’m going to show you how.

Danny’s not here, Mrs. Torrence, but hello accessories! A pop of color can really make or break an outfit. In this case the color red goes a long way for this tunic. Redrum indeed!

What’s your husband done now? He’s signed on as caretaker of a creepy hotel in the middle of nowhere during a long, cold, snowy winter? That guy!

Photobucket
Keep it chic with a blazer. A broach adds a personal touch.

Photobucket
Hey, I didn’t know Fred Willard was in this movie! What? I’m just kidding, folks! But whoever that guy is, I bet he knows how to cut a rug!

Before there was the internet, there was this crappy thing! Shelley finds company in the transistor radio wearing a fun jacket. She sure looks comfy! Over and out.

Hedgemazers sure get cold so be sure to bundle up in
a warm coat. Hey, wait up, Danny! That kid’s going places. And hopefully he gets there before his ax-wielding dad!

You may just be cooking at home (or in an abandoned hotel) for your family, but why not dress up a little?

This blouse really makes Shelley’s eyes pop! Or maybe that’s just the fear.

Don’t forget the lip balm to keep your pout nice and…SHINY.

Photobucket
Uh oh. Husband going a little sir crazy? Good thing you’re wearing your watch. Now you’ll know the exact time when he tries to kill you! But at least you look comfortable. Heeeeeeerrrree’s cotton!

Here’s a tip: it’s easier to flee from your murderer in nice thick winter socks. Toasty!

Aw Shelley why so sad? Maybe if you had this luxurious sweater coat instead of a bathrobe you’d be a lot happier.
