Why Are You Facebooking My Friends?

LP32

What kind of sick game are you playing, buddy?

Several months ago I wrote about this guy I was seeing that was worse than Phil Spector and OJ combined. At least OJ was in the Naked Gun movies and those were funny. And Phil Spector is responsible for some of the greatest music of all time. They had redeeming qualities.

This guy, who we will refer to as Captain Asshat (which is really generous of me considering he is not in the navy), decided at some point to facebook all of my friends. After our blow-out he practically raced to his computer to unfriend me (which really showed me) but stayed facebook friends with all of my real friends. I think this is the sign of a sociopath. We weren’t even considered boyfriend/girlfriend, just dating casually, so why did he feel the need to facebook them in the first place? And why did he hang on to them? From what I understand he continues to comment on their status, “liking” things, even taking things from their profiles and claiming them as his own, which really bothered one of my dearest friends.

Facebook is getting out of control. People post the most personal things as their status updates, or choose photos of them in their bathing suits doing yoga poses for their man profile. Are we ready for this? I don’t think I am.

However I will be the first to admit that I do not have a flawless facebook record. For with facebook comes facebook stalking, of which I am guilty. My friend and I like to go “boy shopping” in which we check out the profiles of guys that we have in common to see who is single, who is hot, and who has similar interests. But it ends there.

Just because it’s the internet doesn’t mean it doesn’t have repercussions in real life.

And the difference between me and Captain Asshat is that I don’t go around friending people who I have no business friending. Captain A is venturing into an area of facebook in which he should not be. No fly zone, buddy. Park the plane, Travolta. Go home.

Even weirder is when you’re friends with your friend’s bf/gf and then they break up. Do you still stay facebook friends with them? I suppose it depends on how friendly you were with them and how bad the break-up was. But I think it’s weird if you stay facebook friends and try to pass it off as a real friendship. Basically, friend’s ex, stop commenting on everything and facebook iming me. We never hung out before and we’re not going to now. And stop trying to get intel about my friend. She’s moved on.

Goddamn I wish facebook was around when Seinfeld was on the air. Think of the episode possibilities! George trying to facebook Marisa Tomei. Elaine accidentally posting something personal as a note instead of as a private message to the guy she was seeing. Kramer starting a facebook group that turns into a real religion. And Jerry would probably be on my side about facebook grey areas. “You just don’t stay facebook buddies with your ex’s friends! It’s bad form! Come on!” And think of the great wall interactions: NEWMAN — “Hello Jerry.” JERRY — “Hello Newman.”

Serenity now.

That Mad Ache.

I’ve established that I Dont Want A Boyfriend (and btw Sven is doing fine thank you) but what I would like to kiss, be kissed, and kiss again. I don’t even want sex, I’m going through a robot phase right now (in which I feel…well, like a robot, and robots don’t sex, unless it’s robot sex, which I guess is plugging one robot into another? Oh gosh, how explicit) but I could go for a good kiss. A GOOD kiss.

The type of kiss where you’ve been dying to kiss each other and you both know it but neither of you are sure of when, where, or how it will happen, only that it will happen, because it has to happen. Maybe you’ve met through a mutual friend and the three of you are hanging out and at some point the two of you lock eyes and think, “Yes.” (Isn’t yes the most wonderful word? I have a necklace that says Oui on it. It’s my favorite thing.) That tension becomes harder for you all to ignore, like Lady GaGa in her outlandish outfits sitting behind Beyonce at the VMA’s.

You flirt for him, telling jokes, and they all land. At one point he’s drinking water and you tell a joke and he laughs so hard he spits his water everywhere and you think, “Goddamn I’m good.” I don’t know if there’s anything more powerful than making a man laugh. And you’re doing this back and forth routine and you’re thinking, God when is our friend going to leave us alone together? But you don’t know each other well so you’re not even ready to be alone together but you know that you want to be eventually. You part ways, for now.

Finally one of you caves, inviting the other one over to “hang out” or get dinner, or whatever. You both focus on your menus, or the book titles of the bookstore where you meet, or anything printed in front of you, because you need to keep your eyes busy so you don’t lock them on the other person the entire time. “We are living in a society,” said George Costanza. We can’t just kiss people we just meet, or can we? No, we can’t. Have some decorum.

But then the moment happens, and it always feels like it finally happens, like it’s been dragged out for hours, like a Robert Altman film. Like one of the lesser known Robert Altman films, or maybe Gosford Park. Ugh. One of you makes the move, maybe it’s silent, maybe it’s sudden, maybe it’s clumsy, maybe one of you even says, “Come here” before you do it, just to be safe, and then you kiss and it’s that perfect kiss where you can feel the intensity of the other person without feeling their entire tongue. It’s the kind of kiss that is so perfect that all you want to do is keep kissing, because what could be even better than that?

That’s what I want.

LOL

Mufasa’s death was a terrible tragedy; but to lose Simba, who had barely begun to live… For me it is a deep personal loss. So it is with a heavy heart that I assume the throne. Yet, out of the ashes of this tragedy, we shall rise to greet the dawning of a new era… in which lion and hyena come together, in a great and glorious future! — Scar, on schadenfreude, The Lion King

So we’re all familiar with schadenfreude right? Good. I think schadenfreude is the most comfortable human feeling. It’s right up there with biting into a hot pocket. How many of us hoped that our high school enemy would fall on the stage on the way to get her prom queen crown, or blackout and get stabbed by an angry biker gang, or something, I don’t know we didn’t have prom queens at my high school, I went to an all girls school so I don’t really know how normal high schools work. But that’s not important right now.

I know that at some point we have all wished our ex some kind of harm. Whether it was being insulted by Marshall McLuhan while in line at the movies or having a birdcage fall on their head, we wanted them to befall some sort of misfortune. And if you haven’t wanted that then maybe you should just get into your magical flying pirate ship and fly back to Happyface Island where monkeys are high fiving each other and barbershop quartets are singing on every corner. I don’t know.

We just want to laugh at their misfortune. My friend got the opportunity of a lifetime.

Her ex, a smarmy a-hole law school student, was bitchslapped by karma on national TV when he lost one million dollars on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?. I couldn’t watch the whole thing because I have this thing where I can’t watch “real people” get embarrassed. It makes me cringe. I can watch Curb Your Enthusiasm because that’s not “real” but hidden camera shit or something makes me turn away. But what I did see was glorious. He went from high fiving the audience like a tool to nearly bursting into tears when he lost everything. The best part is that REGIS PHILBIN told his girlfriend, sitting in the studio audience, to dump him.

I’m not going to go into the sordid details of their relationship so let’s just say that he wasn’t very kind to her. So there’s that. Also it would be cruel to laugh at this if he was a poor college student but this kid is 24 and makes six figures at his entertainment lawyer job and graduated from _______ Law so he’s set for life. He also went to college when he was 16 which is why he’s 24 and already practicing law. When asked what he was going to do with the money if he won it, he said he was going to go to Antarctica because it’s the only continent he’d never been to.

The first guy I was ever with broke my heart. He also came from a privileged background and I wanted nothing more than to see him crash and burn for running around on me with another girl. But guess what? After the dust had settled and we had both grown up a bit, he sent me an email in which he admitted that he treated me terribly and that he was sorry.

That’s all it takes. An apology, but a heartfelt one, in which you realized what an ass you were. Thats what makes the schadenfreude go away. And girls do this too. Girls are mean and break hearts and are assholes. It’s not just a guy thing. Being a dick has no gender. If you are one, you need to realize that at some point in your life you’re going to be humiliated on national television by Regis Philbin and that people are going to put that on youtube and laugh at you. Or something. But if you realize that you were a jerk and you feel badly about it then we’re going to be there for you with a kick to Regis’s crotch. Then we’ll watch the youtube video in which Bret Michaels gets hit in the head by the descending scenery at the Tony Awards, and that will never not be funny, and we will never need to apologize for it.

I Don't Want A Boyfriend.

I don’t know what’s going on with me — maybe it’s sheer laziness — but for the first time in what feels like forever o’clock I don’t want a boyfriend.

Cue Fred Willard, smiling, “Wha hoppen?!” I don’t know, Fred Willard, I don’t know. I think I just don’t care anymore. The only men I want are fictional. Like Don Draper. And Don Draper. And maybe the kid from 500 Days of Summer. And Don Draper. It’s easier to want fictional men because there’s no fear of rejection. And you know that they’re attractive and everything that you’ve always hoped they would be.

The only downside of course is that you can’t introduce them to your friends/show them off. Not only because they don’t really exist but because it would be a little disquieting if I said to my friends, “I’m dating this great guy named Don, he’s in advertising, he has a stern brow, and I think he may take me to Gimbel’s for lunch!”

I read in a magazine that Amy Sedaris has an imaginary boyfriend, saying something like, “In order for a relationship to work, one of you has to be imaginary.” This was a revelation. Maybe a dark and unsettling one, one that you shouldn’t tell people about, but holy shit I agree with her.

I’d like you to meet Sven. Sven is in the music industry. He’s very handsome. He kind of looks like Don Draper but thinner and younger and with less of a stern brow and a hint of stubble. He’s tall and he likes to wear feathers. At least once a week we go to Hugo’s Tacos off Riverside. Sven just loves Hugo’s Tacos. Our thoughts on Hugo’s, the restaurant, is a little mixed: I think it’s a little too loud and annoying, and Sven thinks it’s the quintessential LA restaurant but without the bullshit. So then I joke, well then how quintessentially LA could it really be, Svenny? and he smiles an awkward Bob Dylan smile and somehow we wind up talking about Robert Altman.

I still don’t quite understand exactly what Sven does for a living but I love to look at his business card. His office has a signed poster of Mariah Carey but it’s signed by Stevie Nicks. Sven has the best stories. He has a house in Laurel Canyon, which I hate, because I hate driving on Laurel Canyon but I know he’ll never move. Once you get past the drive and the annoying parking situation, it’s the perfect house. It has a small pool in the entryway and it always smells like sun. Sven has a dog named Mack, short for Mack The Knife, with the entire name spelled on the collar. We like to catch a film at the Laemmle on Sunset after work. But Sven knows that sometimes I get tired of going over the hill so we hit the Arclight in Sherman Oaks.

Sven doesn’t have any trace of an accent which surprises people. He has a wonderfully weird sense of humor that is never crude. He can cook but only 2 dishes but those dishes are exceptional. Unfortunately he smokes. I keep threatening to smoke 2 cigarettes for every 1 that he smokes, to try to get him to quit. But Sven knows that I’m bullshitting. He knows me so well.

Okay. I know what you’re thinking.

Where exactly are they going with this Joan plotline on Mad Men? They didn’t even really address it in the premiere.

I also know another thing that you’re thinking. You’re thinking that, you just said you didn’t want a boyfriend, but here you are going on and on about an imaginary one. Wouldn’t that indicate that maybe you do indeed want a boyfriend?

I don’t. I would much rather have Sven — simply for his lack of existence.

Why Are You So Ugly?

This is probably backwards thinking on my part but what really upsets me is when an ex’s current girlfriend/fling is less attractive than I am. If she’s more attractive then I can think, “Eh, whatever” but if she’s ugly then I think, “Holy shit, then what was I? I thought I was reasonably good looking but look at what you’re dating now. Girl looks like Dudley Moore with boobs.”

I’ll own up to the fact that this is mean but it’s not like I ever tell my ex, “Hey you’re dating Nick Nolte’s mugshot.” I keep it to myself. Well, myself and the internet. But it’s not like I name names or post photos. I would never do that. That’s way harsh, Tai.

Or sometimes I’ll be dating someone and I’ll check their facebook profile and I’ll see photos of them with previous girlfriends and I’ll just be shocked by the homeliness of it all. It’s like they’re dating Jennifer Aniston but without the hot body. And it worries me. Why are they dating me? And is the person that I’m dating not really as attractive as I think they are? Because don’t hot people typically date other hot people?

I know, it shouldn’t matter. But this is who I am. Looks are important to me. I can’t date someone if I’m not physically attracted to them. I just can’t. Everyone has a certain type or two that they really dig. So If I dig a skinny awkward/cute type then chances are he digs girls with Zooey Deschanel haircuts. So imagine how alarming it would be if his ex looked like a Great Depression-era farmer.

Imagine that you’re at a party and there’s a glass bowl of champagne punch. It looks beautiful and it probably tastes great. But then someone plunks down a plate of half eaten baloney sandwiches on a tray cluttered with dirty napkins and chewed gum beside it. Are you still going to be as inclined to drink the punch? No. It’s like, why don’t you just poison the goddamn punch. Even if you tasted the punch and it was delicious, you’re going to start to wonder what kind of person throws a party where they allow rubbish on the buffet table.

I don’t think people should date under their hotness level. Look at Fred Armisen and Elizabeth Moss. That’s a great couple. Now look at Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob. They divorced. And why? Because he’s way less attractive than she is. Now look at Brangelina. Your honor, I rest my case.

(Oh don’t even start with, “Well what about Hugh Jackman, his wife is pretty normal looking.” Hugh Jackman is gayer than a handbag full of rainbows.)

WHAT. I’M JUST SAYING.

In conclusion, do not send me hate mail, I’m no Michelle Pfeiffer circa “Scarface” and I know it, okay? I’m just being honest. That’s what this blog is about. Honesty. Or something I don’t really know what this blog is about. Ask your mom.

Let It Die.

I made out with this dude 3 years ago and lately he has been trying to ~~get with me~~ again. I’m not saying that I’m a golden horse on a carousel; in other words, I’m not trying to brag. I’m just amazed that this dude is still trying. It was 3 years ago and I was drunk and he grabbed me and kissed me and wouldn’t let go. We’ve been the most awkward of “friends” ever since.

He’s been inviting me to lots of facebook events and I have politely declined. I always like to explain why I cannot come to an event because I hate when people who I expect to come to my events click “no” and don’t say why. In real life you would give me some sort of explanation. Don’t try to hide behind facebook just because you can. It’s rude!

Anyway I’m on facebook merrily surfing my way through other peoples’ lives when he AMBUSHES ME VIA FACEBOOK INSTANT MESSAGING. NOT COOL. I wasn’t even aware that I was signed in! And he was like, how’s it going with acting and I’m like, uuhhh fine and he’s like, I’m a financial adviser now and I’d love to give you a free session (and I’m thinking LOL what are you going to advise me on, I have no finances) but I’m like, sure and somehow i told him we would meet up for drinks sometime and free financial advise?

WHY AM I SO UNFAILINGLY POLITE?

It’s like today I had a job interview at a store and I got weird vibes from the guy right off and he was being condescending to me and asking me odd questions and not only did I sit through the interview but at the end I told HIM to have a nice day!! What the fuck??!! HE’S SUPPOSED TO SAY THAT SHIT TO ME.

Whether it’s a job interview or a first date you need to stand up for yourself. You don’t need to be flat out rude or flash them your hoohah like Sharon Stone did in Basic Instinct, because Sydney, let’s be honest, YOUR MOM WAS NO SHARON STONE, but you really don’t want to be too polite or it’s like saying, HEY BRO, WALK ALL OVER ME PLEASE, THANKS!!! SMILEY FACE!!

I feel like I am the only person who does this. I feel like stronger, cooler girls would tighten their lips and say, “Thanks but no thanks” and move on with their lives. I feel like Faye Dunaway and Brigitte Bardot would never put up with this bullshit. So why do I?

But still, dude who I made out with 3 years ago: let it die, bro. Let it die.

The One That Got Away.

We want to believe that the air was heavy with regret for both parties. That we were but characters in an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story. That “everything inside was turning over/minutes seemed to last forever/my fault in, a way, for being clever” (‘In Findley’, Sydne Rome, a great song to set against walking along the Seine in slow motion). We want to believe in The One That Got Away.

Photobucket

The truth is, honey, they’re called “the one that got away” for a reason.

It’s not like misplacing your car keys.

Like, “Oh damn, where’s the one? I thought I put him on the hall table when I walked in.”
“Shelly…he’s just the one that got away.”
“Fuck, I guess I’ll take the bus.”

No. They “got away” like a hostage. They made a break for it when your back was turned. While you were answering the door to help Jodie Foster with her investigation, they captured your dog, did not put the lotion in the basket, and screamed for help. In short, they ran away.

And even though you know this, you still want to believe that there will be a great Katherine Heigl movie moment, where you’ll lock eyes across a hospital or dance floor or whatever the fuck, and you’ll find each other again. And until that happens you want to believe in it so badly that you’ll sing in earnest to songs like the Thompson Twins’ “Hold Me Now”, belting, “BOTH OF US SEARCHING FOR SOME PERFECT WORLD WE KNOW WE’LL NEVER FIND!” Your friends will nod but deep down see what you cannot see:

They got away because they wanted to. This shit is over.

I sometimes think about TOTGA. He was a vaguely famous musician and he was beautiful. Once in a while I’ll see something completely ordinary and I’ll think of him. I’ll wonder what the hell happened. Why he one day stopped responding and why I never heard from him again. (My theory is that he got back together with his ex-girlfriend. That or he never existed and that I dreamed the whole thing). The kicker is, I know that I didn’t do anything wrong; I was a Marc Jacobs coat while he was looking for cutlery and you can’t cut a steak with a coat. (What am I talking about?: older entry ‘She’s Just Not That Into You’

To dip a toe in the pool of self-pity is fine. To wade in it, a little silly, but OK. But don’t swim in it and for God’s sake don’t drown. Because you might find someone out there who will run to you rather than from and you won’t want to miss that.
